Replacing Your Vehicle's Tailgate Handles with Chrome

If you have a pickup truck or any other type of sports utility vehicle, chances are that you have a tailgate and tailgate handle. The tailgate handle is responsible for opening and closing the tailgate. It also acts as a locking mechanism to secure the tailgate when it is closed. If this tailgate handle becomes cracked or broken, you will need to replace it with a new part as soon as possible. It is important to not wait until the last minute to replace your tailgate handle. Fortunately, if you have some basic knowledge about automotive repair, installing a new chrome tailgate handle cover should be a fairly simple process for you.

For many pickup trucks, the tailgate is completely smooth except for the tailgate's handle. For those that want to add a completely smooth look to the appearance of their vehicle's tailgate, you will likely want to replace the tailgate handle. A tailgate handle is just one of the many aftermarket accessories available for any vehicle year, make and model. Many of the tailgate handles that you see today are usually made of durable plastic or chrome materials.

When you receive your new tailgate handle, you can expect to receive all of the hardware and parts that you need in order to properly install the accessory. Once you have received your new tailgate handle for your vehicle, you can now being the installation process. For a typical tailgate handle replacement installation, you will need to acquire a Phillips head screwdriver as well as a flat head screwdriver. After you obtain these tools, you will then be prepared to begin installing your new tailgate handle. Initially, you will first want to find the mounting screws for the tailgate handle that is on the inside of the tailgate. Using the Philips head screwdriver, carefully remove these screws and place them in a small container to hold. You will then need to disengage the latch rod from the tailgate handle. You can do this by simply pulling the rod out of the clip on the tailgate handle or by prying it out using the flat head screwdriver.

Before the next step of the installation process, be sure that the replacement tailgate handle matches the same dimensions of the factory-installed handle. After you have verified that you have the proper tailgate handle, secure the latch rod to the replacement tailgate handle by pressing it into the clip. Once the latch rod is secure, insert the mounting screws into the tailgate and tighten the screws using the Philips head screwdriver. Be sure that the handle is completely secure to the tailgate of your vehicle. After everything is secured, be sure to test how the new tailgate handle and latch function. If they are not working properly, be sure to review the specific instructions that you were given for your tailgate handle. Many aftermarket tailgate handles today, as well as other aftermarket accessories, are fairly simple to install. In fact, many of today's aftermarket accessories can be installed within a matter of minutes.
